Swimming with Whale Sharks

December 1, 2016

The past few days in La Paz have been nice. 2We’ve had a few great walks along the Malecon and around town sourcing repair parts. Yesterday we went swimming with whale sharks. Don’t worry grandmas, they are not really whales, nor sharks. Just really big fish. I set up a trip with a local panga driver and invited 3 other kid boats to join us. It was well worth the money. Too bad my camera battery died after the first few encounters. I’m hoping we get a chance to drive Sand Crab out to the point and spend all day stalking them. They feed at the surface and then dive deep when spooked. Lisa was squealing with delight when the guide dropped her right in front of a massive one and it swam by slowly. We could hear it through the snorkel! Afterwards we all went for pizza at Stella, the sand-in-your-toes palapa near the in town marinas. The kids all worked up an appetite by swimming for a few hours. The parents enjoyed a few cold beverages as well. I still can’t believe that less than 6 months ago, deer were eating the grass under Beach Flea, and now we’re over 2000 miles from Bend. 3I miss a few things about Bend: Great people, nice drivers, and a selection of IPAs. It’s funny, most of the kid boats we tend to gravitate to are all from the northwest and a common complaint is the lack of tasty beers. Maybe Woody from the Deschutes Brewery would like to make a visit soon.

Luke and I tested out the drone today to make sure it works well on land before we fly it from the boat. Can’t afford any water landings. It’s fun and Luke begs me to fly it all the time. I think he might be the one in charge of it as he instinctively knew what every button on the control unit did. I can’t imagine the footage he’ll get with it and look forward to sharing it.

It’s good to know that the local police protect the clocktowers. Since I’ve lost my watch, I have to rely on the local town square clock. What time is it anyway?4

And the sunset was painfully average tonight. Not the best that La Paz has produced in the past. 1Hopefully tomorrow will be better. We’ll see!
